More Knowledge with Fewer Animals (MKMD)

Although the bond between humans and animals is strong, it has not prevented us from using animals for our own interests. This situation is as ambiguous as it is contradictory. Little wonder, then, that there has been a lively debate in society about the use of animals for medical and other research.

The Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMw) aims to stimulate health care research and innovation. To this end, it has set up the More Knowledge with Fewer Animals (MKMD) programme, which serves two purposes:

  • the development of new animal-free innovations;
  • the implementation of both new and existing animal-free innovations.

The main contracting authority for the MKMD programme is the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.
